Race Report
Slashing the 3 lap race record by over 3 mph, Siegfried “Siggi” Schauzu clinched an incredible eighth Sidecar TT victory in Monday’s 750cc 3 lapper, postponed from Saturday.
Schauzu and passenger Wolfgang Kalauch beat fellow West German Heinz Luthringshauser (BMW) by over 3 minutes. But the other hero was West German Rolf Steinhausen, who sensationally hammered the outright sidecar lap record from a standing start. On his 680cc Konig-4 2 stroke, he put the lap record to over 98 mph for the first time.
Without Klaus Ender’s the 750cc Sidecar race was more open than anticipated. The Champion’s withdrawal could even have boosted the chances of the first 2 stroke sidecar TT win, and sure enough, a Konig leaped into an early lead.
Rolf Steinhausen, who made an impressive TT debut in 1973, was leading by 11 seconds at Ballaugh, 17 miles from the start. And a second Konig, ridden by the Boret brothers, Gerry and Nick, was 2nd, 11 seconds down, but clear of the race favourite Schauzu.
By Ramsey, Steinhausen had increased his lead to 20 seconds, but Schauzu was closing the gap on Boret. At The Bungalow, Steinhausen’s Konig was up by 29 seconds, but Schauzu had overtaken Boret and pulled out a corrected time advantage of 24 seconds.
By the end of the first lap, Steinhausen had shattered the lap record. His standing start lap of 23 minutes 3.4 seconds was almost 19 seconds better than Enders’ lap record and over 98 mph.
The flying Steinhausen was 31.4 seconds ahead at the end of lap 1, with 2nd placeman Schauzu lapping 4.2 seconds faster than the Borets.
It was good for the West Germans, but bad for Britain. The Boret brothers pulled into the pits and lost 2 minutes 46 seconds changing a plug that oiled up at Ramsey.
Jeff Gawley was also out at Crosby. Mac Hobson stopped at Barregarrow with a broken suspension and George O’Dell had also retired.
There was drama all the way. West German Richard Wegener and English passenger Derek Jacobson crashed at Kerrowmoar. Pieces of their BMW were strewn across the road as Bill Currie and passenger Kenny Arthur approached. Currie clipped his right foot on a petrol tank. He carried on until Ramsey, he could not change gear anymore, so passenger Arthur took over the controls with Currie in the chair and rode the machine back to the pits, from where Currie was taken to the hospital for an X-ray.
At the end of lap 1, Luthringshauser was 4th, 18 seconds ahead of Dennis Keen and Mick Horspole. Steinhausen, on lap 2, wasn’t as fast as on lap 1. At the end of lap 2 he still led by half a minute. But at Ballacraine, Manx radio commentator Tommy Robb announced the dramatic situation Schauzu was ahead by 11 seconds.
At Ballaugh, Schauzu had upped his lead to 1 minute 10 seconds and the slowing Steinhausen was still 2nd. But after leading by 30 seconds going into the last lap his Konig gave up the ghost at Guthries on the final climb over Snaefell Mountain. After a historic ride Schauzu said: “It was one of my hardest TT wins. In the first few miles, I had a hard job getting past the Boret brothers, our starting partners. who had got off better than us.”
Runner-up Smoking a pipe with best British tobacco, passenger Kalauch relaxed and revealed that their one big anxious moment came at Ramsey’s Parliament Square on lap 2 when the whole plot turned sideways.
Runner-up Luthringshauser also reported a tough ride, but his ex-Max Deubel BMW wasn’t fast enough, he claimed. He pulled a high gear, but couldn’t rev over 9,000.
A further 3 minutes behind Luthringshauser came 3rd placemen, Mick and John Horspole, on John Bingham’s Weslake. They had finished despite a second lap burst head gasket. A cylinder head stud also broke just as he was dicing with Roy Hanks’ BSA on the mountain and the bolt hit him on the chin.
It was a two horse race. After two hectic laps leader Schauzu was 24 minutes ahead of 3rd man Luthringshauser and they were miles clear of John Barker, who was up to 4th on a Devimead BSA, with Horspole 5th and Boret still 6th, despite his pit stop.
Steinhausen was in trouble, for Schauzu had taken him on the roads and by Ramsey Luthringshauser was also ahead of the ailing Konig.
Of the other British topliners, Mick Boddice was touring over the mountain and Keen was out at The Highlander.
On his old Devimead BSA, which he borrowed back from new owner Chris Isbell when his Suzuki would not function properly in practice, John Barker finished 4th, 22 seconds behind Horspole. He was half a minute ahead of Bill Crook, who finished 5th for the second year in succession, despite his BSA seizing at the 13th Milestone on the first lap.
6th spot went to North East ace Ray Bell on his Konig, which lost the rev counter on the last lap.
In 7th spot the Moran Brothers reported a simple and enjoyable ride. Roy Hanks missed a leaderboard position when his BSA broke the conrod on the last lap. He and passenger Gerald Daniel pushed the outfit from Governors on the last lap. After finishing 17th Roy joked, “I thought the conrod was going and buzzed it for 5 seconds and it cost me 5 minutes.”
The Boret Konig finally expired on the last lap.
The husband and wife Fred and Lesley Lewin team crashed their Norton into the wall at Sulby Bridge. They were taken to Ramsey Hospital, but Mrs Lewin was later transferred by helicopter to Nobles in Douglas for further examinations.
From Kerrowmoar on the opening lap, four were taken to Nobles, but none with serious injuries. They were Wegener and Jacobson plus Roger Dixon and Frank Knights, who also pranged their Weslake.

Race Report
I should have made this start on Monday (when I was 2nd in the 350cc), but I’ve never been known to be early in my life, writes Mick Grant. The Production TT plan was considered for the first lap. I hoped to struggle and stay with Peter Williams to Ramsey on lap 1 then let the Triumph’s superior power give me the advantage over the Mountain, as Tony Jefferies had done last year.
Surprisingly enough, I had passed Peter before Ballacraine and we were on a straight when I got ahead. Though Peter followed close behind all the way to Ramsey, I knew there was no problem because of my power advantage on the Mountain.
After Ramsey on lap 1, all I really had to do was to conserve the engine and gearbox. After 10 of the 150 miles, the show was buttoned up. The only way the plan was slightly upset was when the flies became very thick on the lower part of the circuit, particularly near Quarry Bends. I almost had to stop to clear my visor on the last lap, but decided to continue without a halt because on the last lap I was going almost embarrassingly slowly.
I was delighted for the entrant, Arthur Bennett that I’d won, but was terribly disappointed to hear that Darryl Pendlebury, his regular rider, had tumbled heavily.
That and Dave Nixon’s death took the gilt from the gingerbread. But I was still pleased for Les “King of Wales” Williams, who owns the bike. He’s the best mechanic I’ve ever had on a bike that I’ve ridden.
Mick Grant waved his plaster cast broken wrist to the cheers of the grandstand crowd when he won his first TT, the 1,000cc production machine 3 lapper last Tuesday. On Les Williams’ ex-works. Triumph Trident, entered by Arthur Bennett of Nuneaton, Warwicks, he had just cake walked the event, postponed from the previous Saturday.
On Mr Williams’ Trident, overbored by 10,000 to 748cc, Grant was in command from the start. For the Trident, better known as “Slippery Sam”, it was its fifth and last TT.
Tom Dickie rode the same machine to 4th spot in 1970, then in the following years, “Sam” has won each Production TT, ridden by Ray Pickrell (twice) and Tony Jefferies.
Grant was in command of the race from the start. At Ballacraine on lap 1, he had a narrow lead from Peter Williams (Gus Kuhn Norton Commando), Darryl Pendlebury on Arthur Bennett’s Trident and West German Helmut Dahne on a 900cc BMW.
By The Bungalow on lap 1, Grant had upped his lead to 8 seconds. Really the race had been sewn up by that time.
Peter Williams was 2nd until he was passed by Pendlebury on the climb from The Bungalow to Brandywell, the highest point on the 37.4 mile Mountain Circuit, on lap 1.
At the end of that lap, Grant made his scheduled refuelling stop. It took almost 30 seconds, but that didn’t really matter. As Grant was sat in the pits, Pendlebury and Dave Nixon, on the Boyer Trident, leaped into the lead, with Grant rejoining the event in 3rd place.
Then tragedy struck. Nixon crashed heavily approaching Glen Helen and received fatal injuries. Pendlebury crashed at Kerrowmoar and broke his pelvis, kneecap and received shoulder injuries. And Peter Williams was also out, his Gus Kuhn Norton Commando seizing at The Highlander.
So Grant was back in front. By The Bungalow on lap 2, he had a 53 second lead over 2nd placeman, Dahne, who was 7 seconds up on fellow West German Hans-Otto Butenuth, also on a 900cc BMW.
From then on Grant’s grasp on the victory champagne was never in doubt. But it was tighter for the places. Dahne, troubled by a slipping clutch, refuelled and lost 2nd spot to Butenuth. And Dahne himself came under attack from Geoff Barry on the only surviving Gus Kuhn Norton Commando.
On the last lap, Barry got ahead on the Cronk-y-Voddy straight, then Dahne regained the advantage approaching Guthrie’s. At the Verandah, Barry was back in front, then at Windy Corner, Dahne squeezed ahead again. When the flag dropped, Dahne had taken 3rd spot by 9.2 seconds from Barry, who, in turn, was 1 minute 20 seconds up on Charlie Williams (Honda) and Alan Walsh (Triumph-3).
Graham Bentman, who figured along with Dave Croxford in last year’s BBC film documentary, finished 8th in the class, upped this year from 750cc to 1,000cc. But he had his troubles. At the start, his Norton fired first time, then he discovered that his footrest had turned down and was useless. But he sorted things out to finish 3 minutes ahead of Martin Russell, whose BSA Rocket had been used as a road bike a fortnight earlier.
Charlie Sanby trailed into 12th place after losing a lot of time on a 750cc Ducati which burnt a condenser.
The other “names”? Percy Tait had the primary chain break on his 750cc Laverda at Braddan on the opening lap.
Hugh Evans (1,000cc Laverda) dropped out at Ballacraine on lap 3.
Doug Lunn’s Ducati stopped at Cruickshanks and Ray Knight’s Trident expired at Kirk Michael.
The pace was hot for Grant, who was lapping near the record mark. It was hot, too, for Derek Filler on holiday from Saudi Arabia, when his Norton Commando caught fire as he pulled into his pit.
500cc
Keith Martin, on a road test Kawasaki, broke race and lap records to win the 500cc class for Motorcycle Mechanics in the Marlborough Motor Cycle sponsored race. Martin gained an early advantage and never looked like losing it even when the eventual runner-up, Alan Rogers on Ron May’s Triumph T100T, soared ahead as he stopped in the pits refuelling at the end of lap 2.
Martin regained his lead when he out-accelerated the Triumph from Sulby Bridge towards Ginger Hall. And he went on to win by 30 seconds from Rogers, with Phil Gurner 3rd on Mead and Tomkinson’s BSA B50.
Neil Tuxworth’s Honda took 4th after an uneventful ride ahead of Roger Sutcliffe (Suzuki), who had to have a pain killing injection before the start, following a knee injury received recently in a local Manx event.
But the happiest man at the end was Tony McGurk, whose sponsors squirted him with champagne after he had finished 9th.
Race favourite Bill Smith retired his Honda at Ballaugh on lap 1.
250cc
In his first TT visit, Martin Sharpe won a dramatic 250cc production class on Screen and Plastic’s Yamaha RD250. He shot into an impressive early lead from his first kickstart. By The Bungalow on lap 1, he led by 20 seconds from similarly mounted Eddie Roberts.
And that’s the way it stayed for the first 2 laps. Then slowly Roberts, who was riding with his shoulders strapped up after breaking a collarbone recently at Cadwell Park, began to close the gap.
As they began their last lap, Sharpe had a 7 second lead. On the last lap, Roberts squeezed ahead on the climb out of the Gooseneck and looked to have the race in his
pocket.
But George Fogarty, whose 500cc Suzuki had lost an exhaust pipe, gave Sharpe a “tow” up the Mountain and the gap closed again.
Then as Sharpe closed, Roberts had a monumental slide at the 33rd which hurt his shoulder and detuned him. At Signpost, only 14 miles from the finish, Sharpe regained the lead on braking. Sharpe said: “It probably looked hairy, for it frightened me a bit. But after Bedstead and The Nook, I knew I had it.”
And Sharpe won by 2.4 seconds from Roberts, with Bill Rae 3rd over 70 seconds behind. But Rae, on Eddie Crook’s Suzuki, lost many precious seconds at the start and also had to refuel, while the first two finishers completed the 150 miles without a stop.

Race Report
It was more like the sidelined TT than the Sidecar TT in the Isle of Man on Tuesday when an endless stream of mechanical failures ripped the 500cc World Championship entry to shreds. A retirement list totalling 32 outfits outnumbered the finishers by seven and the possibility of the first 100 mph sidecar lap was dashed before the first of three climbs up the Mountain for World Champion Klaus Enders and the fastest sidecar driver in the Island, Rolf Steinhausen was out of the running.
Their exits left Heinz Luthringshauser and Siegfried Schauzu in front on the roads and Jeff Gawley with a 1 second lead in the race at the end of the first lap. But Gawley’s Konig was also destined to join the machine fatalities and as Schauzu’s BMW got slower and slower 43-year-old West German Luthringshauser and passenger Herman Hahn finally claimed what Luthringshauser has sought since his first visit in 1961, victory in the TT. “It is something I never really expected,” he admitted as he sank a can of beer in the winners’ enclosure.” “I suppose it could be said I was lucky this time, but we kept up a steady pace with a machine that gave no trouble and this often leads to victories in the Isle of Man,” he said.
With drama right up to the last seconds of the race, it was a surprised George O’Dell who found himself being hustled into the winners’ enclosure for the 2nd place. “I can’t believe it,” he said, “another few miles and I am certain the outfit would have fallen to pieces.” His ride with passenger Bill Boldison was certainly eventful. O’Dell hit his foot on the curb at Greeba Bridge on the first lap and had to be helped from his machine at the finish. “It seems to be only bruised, but it’s a bit painful,” said the 28-year-old diesel fitter from Hemel Hempstead. “The machine troubles started on the first lap when the brakes ceased to function. Then it lost 1st gear and the gauze filter on top of one of the carburettor air intakes got sucked inside. The fairing came loose and the exhaust pipes only just managed to hang on,” added O’Dell. “The engine was perfect, but the rest was dropping apart.”
Brake problems also troubled 3rd finisher Mac Hobson and passenger Jack Armstrong. From the first lap Hobson had to pump the back brake on his Yamaha-4 powered outfit. “It was a bit of a worry really and caused a couple of excursions down slip roads,” he said. He also had trouble keeping the engine, fitted with 500 barrels just before the race, buzzing. “I almost stalled it coming round the Governor’s Dip on the last lap,” he said.
Bill Hodgkinson and passenger Peter Sales were taking a pre-race nap and almost missed the start. Luckily someone at their “digs” heard a Manx Radio appeal for their whereabouts and they made the start line with only minutes to spare. They then went out on lap 3 at Ginger Hall while in 11th place when the Norton struck trouble.
While Mick Boddice, destined to go out of the race at Ginger Hall on lap 2 with a broken primary chain, pulled into the pits and lost half a minute changing crossed plug leads.
Dennis Keen became the first retirement when his Konig blew up at Quarter Bridge.
Shortly after Roy Woodhouse started a lengthy and noisy stay in the pits trying to get his Honda under way. He was rewarded with only 1 lap before retiring.
But that was better than Brian Mee who failed to get his Konig wedge out of the warmup area.
By Ballacraine Enders was in the lead on his Busch BMW, but by only 1 second from Steinhausen. 10 seconds behind him came Jeff Gawley, followed by Luthringshauser, Schauzu and Trevor Ireson, the surprise man of the day on his Joe Henderson Konig, completing the leaderboard.
The race lost part of its sting as early as Ballig when Steinhausen’s Konig struck engine trouble and another certain leaderboard contender, Gerry Boret who worked until 4am on race day morning on his Konig, was out after a few miles with spark plug problems.
Enders got no further than the climb out of Ramsey before his machine was struck down with gearbox trouble leaving Schauzu and Luthringshauser with 10 yards separating them leading on the roads, but Gawley was leading the race.
Schauzu was leading on the roads at the end of lap 1, but Luthringshauser had reversed the position at Ballacraine.
Ginger Hall claimed yet another member of the sideline club on lap 2 when Gawley’s Konig seized while almost 2 seconds ahead to leave Schauzu in the lead by about a second.
Derek Plummer’s Konig boosted to 4th place never got the chance to show this on the lap 2 leaderboard for the machine spluttered to a halt at the Graham Memorial.
Schauzu had pulled out 18 seconds on Luthringshauser by The Bungalow as Ireson set about establishing 3rd place and was actually lapping quicker than the leading BMWs. At the end of the lap, he was 26 seconds behind Luthringshauser in 2nd place.
Otto Haller, with Pauline Goddard as reserve passenger, stopped at Crosby with clutch failure on his BMW just after companion Helmut Schilling seized his BMW at Quarter Bridge.
Alan Sansum’s race ended at the pits and so did Keith Graham’s for his BSA was leaking petrol at a most expensive rate.
Into lap 3 it looked as though Schauzu was heading for his ninth Sidecar TT victory, but there were signs of a problem, for Luthringshauser, 22 seconds in arrears at The Bungalow on lap 2, had reduced the gap to just 5 seconds at Ballacraine. Then on the Cronk-y-Voddy straight it happened. Schauzu’s BMW, never in peak form, started to slow and he toured round to finish in 9th place as Luthringshauser was left completely out on his own.
Ireson came to within 16 seconds of the leading German, but over the mountain he pulled further ahead for Ireson too was in trouble. His outfit, with a 7.5 gallon fuel tank, was running short of its lifeblood and he had to slacken the pace. But even that was to no avail for he ran dry at Governors and had to push in. But to the cheers of the crowd he held 5th place.
O’Dell was next in line, but well over 3 minutes behind Ireson.

Race Report
Only a couple of days after Tony Rutter clinched his 1973-74 350cc double, Charlie Williams equalled the feat by winning the 250cc TT on Wednesday for the second year in succession. On Dugdale’s Maxton framed Yamaha, Williams won the 4 lapper, postponed from 11 am to 4.30 pm because of bad weather, by a minute from Mick Grant, on Gerald Brown’s Yamaha.
Williams had been in command throughout the 150.92 mile event. At Ballacraine on lap 1, he had a 3 second lead over Chas Mortimer, who made a better start than his partner Grant. By Ballaugh, 17 miles out, as the watery sunshine came out, Williams had increased his lead to 6 seconds and Grant had overtaken Mortimer for 2nd spot.
At The Bungalow, more weak and wet sunshine welcomed Williams, who had powered his lead to 22 seconds, with Mortimer again closing on Grant. At the end of the first lap, Williams’ 93mph circuit gave him a 32 second lead (exactly 2 mph) over Grant, who was 2 seconds up on Mortimer, with Phil Carpenter 4th and Austin Hockley 5th.
For Hockley, it was a remarkable lap. His Granby Yamaha began to vibrate badly and at Kate’s Cottage, he hit the bank. After a few hectic moments, he just managed to stay aboard. Then he screwed it on again until after Signpost when the vibration began to worsen. So he toured to the pits to retire. Then he noticed that his front wheel was broken in two places. And at the end of that lap, he was still in 5th spot. Hockley was more worried when he saw the wheel than he had ever been in his racing career.
But Williams wasn’t concerned. He was more than happy with half a minute’s lead over Mortimer, who had passed Grant when the latter hit the straw bales on the exit from Creg-ny-Baa.
Mortimer and Grant set after Williams. Another Yorkshireman, Bill Rae, was up to 4th as Carpenter quit with gearbox trouble.
Grant’s incident at Creg and a lengthy pit stop dropped him to 4th behind Rae. And on lap 3, Rae had taken 3rd spot by Ballacraine.
Williams eased back, but was never in danger. He led a field stretched wide by the difficult conditions, which varied from dry roads to heavy rain.
Irishman Tom Herron was also pulling up through the field despite feeling unwell, a trouble brought on by an infection in his arm, slightly injured at the recent North West 200 in Ireland. As the rain teemed down on the mountain, Herron took 5th spot, 3 seconds ahead of Rutter.
Both Williams and Mortimer entered their last laps without making a refuelling stop, but Grant and Rae, who were battling for 3rd spot, had both stopped.
But there was still more drama on the way. Rae crashed heavily leaving Brandywell, the highest point on the 37 mile Mountain Circuit and chipped his ankle bone when he landed down a bank.
And Mortimer, too, was in trouble. His Danfay Yamaha ran out of fuel at Governor’s Bridge, only half a mile from the finish. He had to “paddle” home and Grant snatched 2nd place by 22 seconds with Mortimer 3rd. Mortimer later revealed that on the first lap, his fuel tank cap opened and he lost about half a gallon before he could close it. And that’s what cost him 2nd place, but he was delighted with the 10 World Championship points which hoisted him back into the points reckoning.
Grant had no trouble apart from that anxious moment at the Creg. Rutter, who lost 4th spot by a fifth of a second to Herron, wasn’t so happy. He said: “I nearly came down at Braddan Bridge on the first lap and that did me. I don’t like it when the conditions vary as much as they did for this race.”
Pete McKinley pulled up to 6th on the last lap, 26 seconds ahead of Ian Richards, on the first air-cooled Yamaha to finish.

Race Report
The loneliest rider in the Isle of Man won Monday’s Junior TT. “I never saw any other rider,” declared Tony Rutter as he crossed the line to win the 350cc race for the second year running with a Bob Priest Yamaha. “I dreaded riding with that number 1 on my machine. I like to race with other riders. I was so lonely out there,” he added.
Perhaps it was a good thing that Rutter did not know too much about what was going on around him for his challengers dropped by the wayside in the wake of his faultless ride.
The main opposition came from Chas Mortimer, who lapped just 8.6 seconds outside Mike Hailwood’s 1967 lap record. Including slowing down for his refuelling stop the Yamaha rider clocked 106.39 mph on lap 3 as he closed in to take the lead from Rutter.
Rutter was also unaware that Charlie Williams, who took over the race lead on lap 2, was closing the distance between him on the road.
Phil Carpenter was also the leader during the first half of the first lap.
Mick Grant, who was down in 7th place on the first lap, stuck to his task and was rewarded with 2nd place. “It took me a couple of laps to get used to the machine,” said Grant, who took over Gerald Brown’s Yamaha which was to have been raced by the injured John Williams. “The machine just felt different. But it ran perfectly,” said Grant. “The only discomfort I had was an aching right shoulder at the end of the arm I broke at Easter,” he added.
3rd spot went to the much improved Paul Cott, but he had more than his share of worries before the race started. He failed to get out for practice on Friday morning and then over the weekend discovered a fault in his Yamaha ignition system. With a unit borrowed from Ken Kay fitted to the machine on Sunday evening he went out in the early hours of race day morning to test the machine. “We took the bike up the Mountain,” he said. “It really was touch and go. We had frame trouble all practice week and the ignition failure was just about the end.”
There was drama on the line for Mortimer, out to boost his World Championship position when the radiator of the Yamaha started to leak. A quick patch up got him away on time, but he was far from happy about his chances.
With Geoff Barry paddling down from the Glencutchery Road on a Yamaha which refused to start, Tony Rutter rounded Ballacraine with a useful lead on the road. By Ballaugh Bridge it was becoming clear that Phil Carpenter on the Norman Ball entered Yamaha was actually leading the race. His lead was 10 seconds over Derek Chatterton at Ballacraine on lap 2 and was up to 3rd place on time.
Williams had upped his lead to 14 seconds for Carpenter went out at Appledene with machine trouble and Rutter, last year’s victor, was up to 2nd.
Mortimer was 15 seconds behind him with Alex George holding 4th place a further 12 seconds in arrears. There was no change as they leaped over Ballaugh with Mick Grant up to 4th followed by Chatterton and Roger Nicholls who was showing well with a riding number as high as 41.
Paul Cott in 7th place had already notched his first official over 100 mph lap on his water-cooled Yamaha.
Through Ramsey and up the mountain, Williams closed on the leader on the road, Rutter and at The Bungalow the Dugdale rider almost had him in his sights. At the end of lap 2 Rutter was still in front on the roads, but Williams, leading the race by 10.5 seconds, was just in the process of overtaking Mortimer, until then 2nd on the roads.
Williams’ second lap at over 105 mph boosted him even further and at Ballacraine he held a 13 second advantage.
George lost valuable seconds when he stepped for fuel at the pits, where holidaymaker John Cooper was in charge.
Into lap 3 screamed the leaders, but at Bradden Bridge, Chatterton, in 6th place, was sidelined when his Yamaha cut out.
Mortimer it seemed, was not happy with being passed by Williams and at Ballaugh had inched ahead again in their first 3rd place battle.
Grant was up to 4th, but 47 seconds behind Mortimer.
Ken Hugget’s hopes came to an end at Union Mills when his Yamaha stopped.
The pattern was settling down to an issue between the three leaders. Seconds were being gained and then lost by all three as they battled through the cold wind under overcast skies.
At The Bungalow the order was still the same with Williams 12 seconds ahead of Rutter, who in turn held a 7 second advantage over Mortimer. But then drama. Williams was coasting down the mountain and pushing in from Creg-Ny-Baa.
At the end of the lap, Rutter stopped for fuel followed by Mortimer who was just 3 seconds in arrears of last year’s winner. Mortimer’s stop was fractionally quicker and he eased slightly ahead as the pair disappeared down Bray Hill.
Next in for fuel was Grant now up to 3rd and the impressive Paul Cott was boosted to 5th.
Then as the leading pair raced into Crosby side by side on lap 4, Mortimer coasted to a halt with a seized engine. “Just before Glen Vine, the clutch started to tighten. I thought ah well, I will just carry on, but then the engine seized and I stopped in a cloud of smoke,” he said.
So at Ballacraine, there was no doubting that Rutter could well be on his way to a second victory in a row. Grant, up to 2nd, had George hard on his heels with Nelson, despite his second fuel stop, up to 5th.
Neil Tuxworth, who had just recorded his first official 100 mph lap, went out at Greeba Bridge on lap 4 while holding a creditable 10th place.
At The Bungalow the leader was out on his own and on corrected time had an incredible 1 minute 29 second lead over Grant who was showing signs of trying just that much harder than the immaculate leader.
Then there was trouble for George, who coasted over the Mountain to the pits for a plug change. Nelson was up to 4th behind Cott.
With the sun breaking through at Ballacraine and Rutter rushing off to find it, Williams coasted to the pits. “The big end went just as I screwed it on coming out of the Creg,” he said.
George, catching Grant at 5 seconds a lap, reckoned the plug trouble robbed him of 2nd place and it certainly let the Yorkshireman, some 1 minute 40 seconds behind Rutter at Ballacraine on the last lap, off the hook. George changed the offending plug and finished 23rd.
The 3rd place battle was developing into a really close fight between Cott and Bill Guthrie, who came through steadily on his Danfay Yamaha. 6th at the end of lap 3 he came through to race Nelson on time and displace Tom Herron to make his top three challenge.
But the changes were still ringing on the final lap and with Rutter pulling steadily further ahead it was the 3rd place battle that caused interest. In the end, it went to Cott just 3 seconds ahead of Tom Herron. Nelson hung on to 5th place. “The trouble is that I
had to make 2 pit stops, otherwise, I could have done better,” he said.
Guthrie dropped back to 6th again, but was the last finisher to average over 100 mph.
After Alan Rogers in 7th came Welshman Roger Nicholls who pipped Phil Gurner by a mere fifth of a second. “I was lucky to finish at all,” said Nicholls. “I had to fix the fairing when I made a pit stop and that came undone again. Then I ran out of petrol on the last lap although the one cough I got out of the machine at Governors was enough to propel me along to the finish.”
West German Helmut Kassner was hoping to get in on the World Championship points score, but his ignition failed on the last lap and he pushed in from Governors to finish 26th.
Impressive performance came from newcomer Martin Sharpe who finished in 13th place on the Screen and Plastics Yamaha. “I lost concentration a little on the last lap,” he admitted, “otherwise it was a very pleasant ride.”
Geoff Barry, who almost ran himself in instead of his new Yamaha engine, struggled on despite an exceptionally stiff gear change to finish 31st.
Possibly the happiest man on the Island just after 1 pm though, was Aussie Jack Ahearn, back in the TT for the first time since 1966, who finished 34th. “I finished the race and that is the main thing,” he said. “My only real comment is that the race is too short these days.”

Race Report
Clive Horton literally “talked” his Yamaha into winning Friday’s non-World Championship 125cc Lightweight TT coaxing his bike over 3 laps of the Mountain circuit with words of encouragement. The 23-year-old foundry supervisor from Alvaston, Derbyshire, scored a fairytale win in only his third TT.
Blown all over the road by strong winds which kept his average down to 88.44mph, privateer Horton proved his top practice time was no fluke by beating Ivan Hodgkinson by 40 seconds after 113 miles of persuasive talk!
Tom Herron, racing a 125cc in the Island for the first time, was 3rd, some 41 seconds behind Hodgkinson whose Granby Yamaha kept cutting out after he passed the Irishman. Herron, who started 40 seconds before Hodgkinson, was slowed by gearbox problems on the last lap when his Yamaha popped out of 4th and 5th gears with frustrating monotony.
Chas Mortimer, the race favourite in an international TT which surrendered its World Championship status to the Swedish Grand Prix, went out on the first lap, limping home from Ramsey Hairpin in 2nd gear after breaking a piston ring. His Yamaha was a reluctant starter as he pushed off with Jan Kostwinder who finished 6th after being 1,000 revs down throughout the race was 3rd at Ballacraine, but down to 7th at Ballough.
Dicing like short circuit scratchers after starting together, Austin Hockley and Horton were virtually inseparable, but Hodgkinson was 5th, behind Alan Jones, the early leader, who shared 3rd place with Herron. As they screamed past the grandstand at the end of lap 1, Hockley led Horton by less than 1 second. But, as they dived down Bray Hill to start their second lap Horton overtook Hockley.
Down to 6th, after being passed by Hodgkinson, Herron and Fred Lauchbury going great guns on his Maico, Jones gave a thumbs down signal as he flashed past the pits before stopping to remove his broken fairing at Union Mills.
Gearbox trouble stopped Hockley at Ballacraine, where he related his problem over Manx Radio to last year’s winner Tommy Robb. Unable to select 5th gear, Hockley watched Horton disappear with a lead of 35 seconds over Hodgkinson.
At Ballaugh the gap had grown to 52 seconds, with Herron 3rd. At Ramsey, Hodgkinson had cut Horton’s lead down to 47 seconds. But it was back to 52 seconds at The Bungalow and up to 54 seconds by the end of lap 2.
With Jones’ Maico sidelined by gearbox selector trouble at Ginger Hall, Launchbury stepped up to 4th, well behind Herron, but 16 seconds clear of Ken Daniels who moved up from 8th to 5th as Kostwinder, shaking his head, completed the first 6.
The 43 starters were already decimated, with Ian Richards breaking a collarbone as he skidded off at Ballacraine and Carl Ward out with a split petrol tank.
But while others seized their engines, Horton was out on his own. Too busy talking to his bike to heed the crowds waving him through The Bungalow, after flogging his engine from sea level to 1,400 feet, Horton led Hodgkinson by 39 seconds. And although his pursuer tried hard to close the gap, Horton pulled another second out of the bag as he hurtled past newspapers blowing around the Creg.
Anxious to keep his revs down, after burning a piston in practice, Ken Daniels made the most of the downhill run to pull away from Launchbury and finish 4th behind Herron, one of the most consistent performers of the week.

Race Report
Former public schoolboy Chas Mortimer capped some fine performances this season when he won Friday’s F750cc TT and nearly didn’t start. As the machines were brought to the line, a coil burned out on his Yamaha and mechanics had to replace it in a couple of minutes. He made it with seconds to spare.
On a Danfay entered Yamaha powered by Gerald Brown’s 350cc engine which the injured John Williams rode in his 114 mph North West 200 lap and which Mick Grant rode in the 350cc TT, Mortimer led at the end of laps 2, 4 and 5. And despite being troubled with an oil leak on the last lap, he also led when it mattered at the finish. He won by 8.6 seconds after 6 laps and 226 miles, from Charlie Williams, also on a 350cc Yamaha.
Conditions were at their worst and most demanding as the 70 starters lined up in Glencutchery Road, Douglas. In parts it was raining, in others it was dry, but the track was damp. The wind was strong and variable and gusts of up to 25 knots made riders very wary on the mountain.
As Tony Jefferies dropped the Manx flag for the clutch start, the only 700cc Yamaha-4 in the race was that of Phil Carpenter. The rest were still in the wraps, their riders preferring the 350cc twins in these conditions.
The conditions weren’t exactly suiting the big, powerful machines, but by Ballacraine, 7 miles out, on lap 1, Paul Smart (Suzuki) led Peter Williams (John Player Norton) by a second with Mick Grant (Kawasaki) and Jack Findlay (Suzuki) tying for 3rd another second behind. Then came Carpenter, 4 seconds down.
The drama was just beginning to unfold. Another 10 miles on, at Ballaugh’s famous hump-back bridge, Peter Williams, the odds-on favourite, was leading by 8 seconds from Charlie Williams. But there was no joy in the John Player Norton camp, for Williams retired after another 300 yards with a suspected broken piston.
That left Charlie Williams ahead, but by The Bungalow, near the top of the mountain stretch, Carpenter was ahead by 4 seconds from Mortimer and Charlie was 5th.
At the end of a topsy turvy opening lap, Carpenter led Mortimer by 5.2 seconds, with veteran Percy Tait another 3.4 seconds behind and Irishman Bill Guthrie a further second in arrears.
It was the privateers’ day. The Works bikes were struggling. Smart was 7th, Dave Croxford 11th on the second John Player Norton, Grant 12th and Jack Findlay off the leaderboard.
Carpenter, too, was in trouble. Consolidating his lead, his Yamaha burst the bottom radiator hose and he stopped at Sulby Bridge.
Croxford was also out, at Ballaugh, within 100 yards of the other John Player Norton. Findlay was touring over the Mountain, Grant was slowing (eventually spent 12 minutes in the pits) and Smart was also in trouble. Both the thirsty Suzukis, fitted with dry weather tyres, had run out of petrol.
Despite slowing down to refuel in 31 seconds, Mortimer led on lap 2 from Guthrie and Tait, but on lap 3, Guthrie, who made only one stop (at the end of lap 3) took the lead from Mortimer and Tait.
The record number of fans were amazed at the little known Irishman who was leading the TT and in line for the £1,000 first prize. But by lap 4, Guthrie was back in 5th spot, behind Mortimer, Gordon Pantall, who had come up from 9th on lap 1, Charlie Williams and Tait.
The final petrol stops at the end of lap 4 settled the situation and gave Mortimer a clear advantage. Speeds, too, increased as riders learned where the wet and dry spots were and as the rain eased on the mountain.
Pantall, on the 750cc TWS Suzuki, was the only big 2 stroke in the hunt, but a broken rotor blade in the ignition sidelined him at Rhencullen on lap 5 when 2nd.
Tony Rutter, on Bob Priest’s Junior winning 350cc Yamaha, was gaining ground and at the end of lap 5 was 3rd behind Charlie Williams and Mortimer on the often changing leaderboard.
The drama continued into the final lap. At Ballacraine, Mortimer led Charlie Williams by 22 seconds. At Ballaugh, it was down to 17.8 seconds. At Ramsey, it was 13 seconds. At The Bungalow 9.5 seconds. Coming down the mountain, Williams got ahead of Mortimer on the roads, but he just couldn’t pull back the advantage he had by starting 10 seconds before Mortimer.
Mortimer’s consistent ride had won his TT and Williams’ sluggish early form, he was 8th on laps 1 and 2 cost him a TT double.
Rutter, too, speeded up on the last of the 37 mile laps and he took 3rd, 26.8 seconds down on Williams. Said Rutter: “Conditions were very rough. The roads were damp and treacherous, but things improved towards the end. It was so slippery, both Charlie Williams and I were having wheelspin on the straight to The Highlander.”
Rutter finished half a minute ahead of 4th placeman Tait, whose private Triumph Trident-3 never missed a beat. At one stage in the second half of the race, he was up to 2nd, but he slowed towards the end when his shoulder became painful. But the 45-year-old “youth” was given the hero, programme waving treatment all round the circuit. He finished a second ahead of Guthrie.
Quiet Ulster cabinet maker Guthrie, who rode his 350cc Yamaha in preference to his 700cc which gave much trouble in practice, reported an incident free ride. But gasping fans at the leap after Bray Hill reported that on one lap, he had been very close to the kerb when he was monowheeling at 130 mph. Said Guthrie: “I could hardly believe I was leading the TT. I got a signal with 1st on it and I looked behind to see who was catching me up.”
Nearly 2 minutes behind Guthrie came Austin Hockley on the 350cc Granby Yamaha which gave him some hectic moments when the front hub broke at Kate’s Cottage in the 350cc race. Hockley, who started No.67, had only one problem, a sideways slide coming out of Governor’s Bridge Dip. He finished 21.4 seconds up on Alex George, whose major worries occurred when he hit a slow takeoff seagull with his shoulder, had to slow for another flock of gulls on the Mountain and missed a cat by a millimetre.
Into 8th place came Noel Clegg. He notched three ton-up laps, the first by a Manxman. Clegg finished 1.4 seconds ahead of Doug Lunn on a 750cc long stroke vee-twin Ducati fitted with a Pirelli road tyre. Lunn finished exactly half a minute ahead of 10th man Derek Chatterton, also on a 350cc Yamaha, eight of which finished in the first ten. Chatterton, suffering badly from flu, had toured for 10 miles because of a bout of coughing and feeling faint, but his head cleared and he continued.
Welshman Selwyn Griffiths, on Ray Cowles’ 350cc Yamaha, took 11th, clear of Bill Ingham, who took over Bill Tomlinson’s Vin Cunningham entry when his own had been refused by the ACU selection panel. Ingham, who has gone well at all the northern meetings this year, had a major slide at Stella Maris on lap 1, but was delighted to finish and further learn the circuit. He said: “I’ve been to three Manx Grands Prix. In two, I retired on the first lap and in the last one, my bike caught fire, without crashing, at the Waterworks. The marks are still on the road.”
Of the other finishers, Roger Corbett was 16th and had his eyes opened when a sleepy retired rider walked across his path leaving Bray Hill. Grant was 17th on the Works Kawasaki after touring for half a lap on his ill-handling machine which tried to tie itself in reef knots at the bottom of Bray.
Huggett 22nd, was black flagged when marshals “saw something fall off”, but after a pit inspection, he was allowed to continue.
Charlie Sanby retired on lap 2 after holding 10th on a Triumph-3.
Bob Steele, in 7th on his 34th birthday, retired at Ballacraine on lap 3 after sliding off at Braddan.
Geoff Barry, on John Rudge’s Kawasaki, broke a conrod in Ramsey on lap 5.
Pete McKinley, in his first TT and lying 9th, stopped his Padgett Yamaha on lap 4.
Paul Cott slid off without injury when his throttle stuck open at the Mountain Box on lap 1.
Otto Butenuth wasn’t so lucky. He broke a collarbone when he crashed at Braddan on the first lap.
So ended one of the most eventful TTs of recent years. Seventy started only 29 finished, and five got their first TT ton-up laps. They were Tait, Clegg, Guthrie, Hockley and Lunn.

Race Report
Phil Carpenter lived up to all his Island promise on Thursday when he won a reduced wet and windy Senior TT on his Norman Ball 351cc Yamaha twin. Never out of the first two placings throughout, the 26-year-old fork lift truck driver from Rixton, near Warrington, made certain of a place in the TT history books. He gave the Japanese Yamaha factory their first ever Senior victory. “I did not really think I had much chance of winning before the start, but things went right for me,” said the 1971 lightweight Manx Grand Prix winner, who was racing in only his second TT. “The track was dodgy for much of the time, but I made a point of avoiding the damp patches and keeping things as steady as possible.”
Carpenter took over the lead on lap 3 when the wind and rain reached the worst at parts of the circuit as heavy clouds drifted across the Island.
For the first 2 laps, it was Charlie Williams who set the pace, but in the end, his victory chances were ruined by lack of visibility. “The visor misted up, there was nothing I could do about it really,” he said. “The machine was faultless, but it would have been stupid to go faster when I could not see properly.
“Bad by any standards” was how 3rd finisher and double Junior TT winner Tony Rutter described the conditions. “The rain was exceptionally heavy and the wind that came up on the mountain was unbelievable.”
This was certainly backed up by Irishman Norman Dunn who was blown off his Suzuki at Windy Corner. “The bike just leapt across the road, went on to the grass and I fell off,” said Dunn who remounted, but later retired at the pits with a bruised foot.
An articulated lorry that jackknifed in the Crosby area just before the roads closed, resulted in a 15 minute delay to racing while it was towed off the course at Ballacraine. The way Carpenter set off suggested he was trying to make up the lost minutes in one lap.
It contrasted clearly with the luckless efforts of Nigel Rollason to get the Racewaye chiming and it was not until he pushed as far as St. Ninians crossroads at the top of Bray Hill that he was able to leap aboard. There was no reward for Rollason’s efforts for he struck engine trouble at Sulby Glen crossroads.
Ballacraine saw the retirement of two of the leading contenders, Mick Grant, when his 351cc Yamaha struck gearbox trouble and Barry Randle who slid off his Yamaha without injury. “The bike kept jumping out of gear. It was pointless trying to keep going so early in the race, said a disappointed Grant.
By Ballaugh it was obvious that the Suzuki challenge was in danger for Paul Smart was touring and last year’s winner Jack Findlay looked far from happy with his 4 cylinder mile eater.
Williams held a slender lead over Carpenter with Charlie Mortimer in 3rd place. Findlay was leading on the road at Ramsey, but Smart’s problem was showing. He started 10 seconds behind his Suzuki teammate, but was already trailing by 2 minutes 18 seconds.
Up into the blustery mountain Findlay lost more time although he still led on the roads at The Bungalow.
On corrected time it was still Williams as race leader, with Carpenter just 5 seconds behind and Mortimer only another 4 seconds in arrears, followed by Pete McKinley on a Padgett Yamaha.
At the end of the lap, Mortimer made a quick fuel stop. It was a plan that could well have swung the race decision his way, for he lost little ground to the two riders in front who were left to make later fuel stops. But it was not to be. At Ballaugh on lap 2 Mortimer’s Yamaha seized.
Smart toured in at the end of the lap to retire his Suzuki. “The machine simply was not right there has not been enough time to sort it out,” said Smart who arrived back on the Island on Tuesday after racing in the States.
He was followed by Bill Smith who had a nasty moment at Quarter Bridge on the first lap when the rear brake cable of his Yamaha broke.
Rain arrived at Ballacraine at the same time as the race. Williams had increased his lead to 12 seconds over Carpenter with Findlay up to 3rd. Paul Cott added to his Island prestige by moving up to 6th, 13 seconds behind Rutter in 5th place and McKinley in 4th.
At The Bungalow the order was much the same with Cott showing in 5th just ahead of Rutter.
Findlay came in for a quick fuel stop at the end of the lap when he got back into the race he had a near thing at the bottom of Bray Hill when the rear wheel of his heavy Suzuki stepped out. At the end of lap 4 Findlay pulled out of the race with oiled plugs.
lap 3 marked the exit of Roger Nicholls who came off his Hi Tac Suzuki at Sulby Bridge and was treated for cuts and abrasions. He was holding 8th place at the time.
David Hughes, on the Arter Matchless that has taken Peter Williams to a record number of 2nd places in the past, attempted a far-too-fast effort around Ballacraine with the expected result. Hughes, in 11th spot, was not hurt, but the Matchless looked a little the worse for wear.
Another out was Scotsman Alex George whose Yamaha expired at Brandwell and Dave Potter took a flyer at Sulby when his Crescent hit the bridge and he was sent flying over the wall. He landed on the river bank and was not hurt. The cause was rear brake failure on the approach to the bridge right hander.
The first three places were becoming clearly defined on lap 4 with Williams still leading on the roads, but headed in the race by Carpenter who was second on the road. He was followed at The Bungalow by 3rd placeman Rutter who was 24 seconds behind the leader on corrected time.
Into the fifth and final lap sped the leader as West German Hans-Otto Butenuth pushed a ‘dead’ Yamaha twin from Conk-ny-Mona. “Not a good Yamaha debut,” said the BMW specialist.
At Ballacraine Williams still led on the road followed by Rutter and Carpenter. At Ballaugh 9 miles further on, Carpenter was second on the road and 23 seconds in the lead.
At Ramsey’s Parliament Square, the order was the same, but Carpenter had Williams’s Dugdale Yamaha in his sights. Up the Mountain, he made another 7 seconds and at The Bungalow, with only 8 miles to go, Carpenter had a healthy 36 second lead.
Leaving his braking just that fraction later, Carpenter finally inched ahead of Williams on the road going into Governors Bridge, to put the finishing touches to a fine win first across the line, a few yards ahead of Williams, fighting hard to see where he was going.
